Construite sur la base des structures mentales et des processus psychiques individuels, l’identité est un processus dynamique, tout au long de l’existence de chacun, conjuguant singularité, appartenance collective et groupale. Tendant vers une stabilisation de la conscience de soi, le sentiment d’identité n’est pas figé. Il évolue suivant les âges, en fonction des événements de la vie et des traumatismes (séparation, deuil, rencontre, maladie, conjoncture professionnelle…), ainsi que des mouvements sociétaux. Aujourd'hui où le "culte du corps" est omniprésent, que représente le corps dans notre identité ? Et quand tombent les masques de l'apparence, que reste-t-il de notre vie et de notre intériorité ? Les nouvelles technologies d'information, et notamment Internet, caractérisées par la fluidité et l'éphémère, fabriquent des identités virtuelles où le "Je est un autre" de Rimbaud devient bel et bien un "Je est multiple". Peut-on aussi facilement opérer une dichotomie entre l'identité virtuelle et l'identité physique dans ces "nouveaux mondes" où l'on peut "jouer" pendant des heures en inventant une "seconde vie", débarrassé d'un corps vécu parfois comme une encombrante gangue matérielle ? Sociologues, psychologues, psychanalystes nous aident ici à comprendre en quoi les mutations actuelles - technologiques, familiales, culturelles, etc. - affectent le processus de construction identitaire et créent des turbulences à l'éternelle question du "Qui suis-je ?"

Questions of identity continue to intrigue theologians in Africa, and African intellectuals often note communal emphases in African thought. This raises the question, How do ecclesiologies in Africa engage with identity concerns, and how do they envision the Christian identity? Stephanie Lowery argues in this book that theologians in Africa provide theological and biblical arguments regarding Christian identity that are relevant to individual Christians and ecclesiologies in all contexts.
